About the 4 Medical Formulas

Hamwi (1964)

The earliest formula, developed by Dr. G.J. Hamwi in 1964 for clinical nutrition. Published via the American Diabetes Association .

Devine (1974)

Developed by Dr. B.J. Devine in 1974 for drug dosage calculations. It later became a common reference-weight estimate.

Robinson (1983)

Developed by Dr. J.D. Robinson in 1983 using regression analysis of Metropolitan Life Insurance data. Gives values close to Devine.

Miller (1983)

Developed by Dr. D.R. Miller in 1983 using updated Metropolitan Life tables. Typically produces the highest values.

Why Does Ideal Weight Differ Between Men and Women?

At 158 cm the four formulas give men about 3.7 kg more than women, because each formula uses different constants for men and women, derived from historical height–weight data (on average men carry more lean and bone mass). The BMI-based healthy range is the same for both sexes at the same height.
